3D Laser Scans: Artistic Examples

It is overwhelming how artistic some 3D laser scans are.  We have included some examples on this page just to show off the work of our laser surveying company and the work of other companies around the world. As engineers, surveyors and designers, we sometimes forget that many people do not see this type of data very often. Artistic scanning projects are fun projects to do. Typically, we are building a canvas that someone else will ultimately paint.

3d-Scan-Black-white-churchThe project shown here in black and white is a scan we did for a client of a church. Branden Roth has a business that includes precision laser projection. He used a point cloud rendering to get the exact parameters of how his final project would look to the viewer and how it would fit the architecture of the church. We have attached his final projection that was presented on the canvas of the church. (Here is an informative video on how the final projection was built: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5je0dbc9K-I.)

The bridge shown here was completed using 3D design software and shows the beauty of how structures can look in their actual environment even though that environment is a computer model. The sequence of this project – specifically the water and animation – is particularly impressive.

digital-design-studioThis project was designed by the Glasgow School of Art’s digital design studio. This group is world renowned for great laser scanning and animation and modeling of existing antiquities: http://www.gsa.ac.uk/research/research-centres/digital-design-studio/about-the-dds/.  There are other examples of their work included on this page.

With advances in 3D scanning technology, we can achieve not just a more accurate scan of architecture, but have the added benefit of a unique artistic view. For complete information on 3D laser scans, click here.
